Skilled cabinet maker, Alan Medforth sold his business 10 years ago and opted for a change of career in something out of the ordinary, producing hand crafted boats. Although his new venture is somewhat different to cabinet making, he is able to utilise his skills in building giant Canadian canoes, from scratch in his workshop in East Yorkshire.

Each canoe is made from stripped pine planking with chopped strand mat (fibreglass) inside and out. The have built-in buoyancy tanks and are incredibly stable. Alan offers a number of modifications including an option to have a 15hp outboard or even a large canvas awning to make a floating “tent”.

Alan currently has two 30ft canoes, built to a modified Huron canoe design and a smaller prototype (16ft) in his back garden.

Alan is a very inspiring individual, his work is of an exceptional standard and you can see the craftsmanship that goes into each piece. Never resting, he is now working on a catamaran design and has already built a scale model to work to!
